Royal Enfield to launch new motorcycle in 2017

Eicher Motors owned Royal Enfield (RE) is working on two new bikes for India and other export markets. The two bikes would be launched subsequently in 2016 and 2017.

Out of the two bikes Himalayan is first bike that launched in 2016 which is trademark registered by the company. As the name suggests, the bike IS more on the lines of off-roader, scrambler bike. Himalayan powered by a 400cc engine, which is the re-bored version of the current 350cc engine. However multiple changes have been made to this engine.

The second motorcycle is likely to be a cruiser which would be launched in 2017. However, the name of the motorcycle is not out yet.

The two wheeler maker posted sales of 28927 units in combined domestic wholesale and exports in January 2015 recording a growth of 43% over same period last year in India. While on the global front, RE surpassed Harley Davidson in terms of sales. In 2014, RE sold 3 lakh units as compared to 2.41 lakh units of Harley.

The company has been expanding its dealer network and by the end of 2015, it would have added approximately 100 more dealerships. The company also plans revive its dealerships to a new theme and styling. By the end of 2015, Royal Enfield's all 500 dealerships will get the new format.

RE is investing in a technology centre in Chennai (should be ready around mid-2016) and the second is a satellite centre in UK that will be ready by the end of 2015. The company is targeting to produce about 450,000 units in 2015, which includes the original plant and the phase 1 of Oragadam plant. The operations in the second phase will start by the end of 2015 and by mid-2016 the company will be manufacturing about 60,000 units/month.
